Pam Manuele, Tom Booth and Patricia Shelton are sticking geranium cuttings for the 17th Annual MG Plant Sale held at the Lawrence County Extension Office on Buffalo Road.  A common indoor/outdoor plant that most people know as geranium is, botanically, Pelargonium.  They have showy flowers and have been known as the ‘cemetery’ flower.  They do not like our hot, humid summers.  The geranium being worked on here has less showy flowers and blooms over a longer period of time. They are found  in a variety of colors.  This geranium is also known as Cranesbill because a beak-like fruit follows the flower.  Scented geraniums, wild geraniums, and ones with colorful leaves are in this category.  We cut 5” stems of new growth from our favorite plants and let them dry a few hours or overnight and trimmed off any flowers and all but two leaves.  Then we dipped the end of the stem in rooting powder, which you can buy at most nursery centers, and stuck them in moist potting soil about 3”.  We will see signs of new growth in a few days.  Come see our results at the Plant Sale!

Master Gardener Booth at the Fair Next Week

Posted on Updated on

Hey y’all! Come out and visit our booth at the Middle Tennessee District Fair at Rotary Park in Lawrenceburg. This year, our theme is the Secret Garden, so don’t miss it! The theme is designed after the treasured 1949 classic movie, The Secret Garden in which a girl finds a forgotten overgrown garden.

We’ve also decorated the Pick Tennessee Products booth. You’ll find both booths next to one other in the gymnasium (the 3rd building with the exhibits). You can see both exhibits Monday, September 28-October 4. Hope to see you all there.

A side note, if you’ve ever wanted to join the Master Gardeners, pick up an application for next year’s classes.
